Solidifying, 2024 – 2025

Solidifying invites viewers to lie on a cushion — ‘a clean meadow under the high sky’ — beneath hundreds of suspended yellow star-shaped solids. The suspended forms evoke meteors frozen mid-flight, transforming the space into an intimate rainfall. The star forms collapse cosmic and intimate scales — meteors that appear to fall from space yet hover like constellations within reach, embodying both celestial wonder and earthly fragility. The work emerges from the artist’s belief that life is a poem. Gong tells stories with materials like gypsum, clay, chocolate, jade, obsidian, rice paper, grass straw, and dandelion seeds. She invites people to experience the parts of stories she doesn’t say. Her practice is characterized by experiences that create tension between tight and soft control. Her poetics trace a journey from burying oneself in silence to eventually breaking free from fear, reaching toward other-worldliness. Solidifying manifests this reach towards wonder. Viewers return to childhood positions of looking up at starry firmaments, trusting that what falls will not harm but illuminate.
