Impression, 2024 – 2025

Yanying Zhu’s Impression examines how institutional labeling crosses from object to body. Two legs bear marks of institutional processing — registration numbers that catalog and pressure marks that document. Law leaves legible traces  on skin, processed for bureaucratic scanning. Touch — whether tender or aggressive, caring or clinical — leaves pressure marks. The work draws from Zhu’s own experiences, using photography to examine how migration subjects one to multiple systems of documentation and control. By keeping grain, scratches, and gaps visible in the image, Zhu refuses the seamless clarity typical of official documentation, instead emphasizing photography’s material instability. Fluid identity, institutional power, and bodily borders intersect, revealing  the tensions between who we are and how we are labeled.
