I DID WHAT I COULD, 2024 – 2025

Sophia Le Fraga’s practice captures everyday, vernacular text — from scribbled handwritten notes to closed captions mentioning poetry in Law & Order: SVU — to explore how language accumulates. Words, poetry specifically, can be experienced as a physical trace that circulates, appearing in unexpected, delightful contexts. I DID WHAT I COULD enlarges loose-leaf paper in graphite and acrylic, emphasizing its holes and objectness. The humble quiddity of note-taking scales into a more monumental artifact. The text — potentially a cheeky comment on one’s grad-school experience — further celebrates the quiet intimacy of the hand, the physical marks and traces it leaves behind. The work continues Le Fraga’s investigations into loaded language and ephemera that travels through many hands and lives, whether nearly unnoticeable poems printed on clothing tags, or library cards carrying the smudges and esoteric evidence of past users. Coming to visual art through photography and to photography through poetry, Le Fraga creates work that reflects on these small gestures and marks that connect us across time.
